ASRG members appear on NHK -Japanese national television

ASRG on BBC Lorna Milton Show

On 23 January 2008, Dr. Joe Saunders and Assif Mirza, from the Adaptive Systems Research Group (ASRG), discussed and demonstrated their latest research on the "Lorna Milton Show" on BBC Three Counties Radio. Jenna Benson, a BBC roving reporter, presented four live 10 minutes segments from the ASRG lab during the show. She successfully 'built' an arm, vision and wireless system on a Pioneer robot platform and then used software developed by Dr. Saunders to teach the robot to dance with her and wave its arm when she showed it patterned objects. During the show Assif Mirza talked to Jenna about research being carried out using the KASPAR humanoid robot in Human-Robot Interaction and the role of play in child development. Dr. Saunders explained the importance of research into Robot Social Interaction & Social Learning. Also mentioned were the IROMEC and Aurora projects in which robots are investigated as potential therapeutic tools, particularly for the Autism spectrum.

Our robot KASPAR was featured in the Bright Sparks BBC2 Northern Ireland Show (YouTube video); also in a WIRED online article.

IROMEC project on BBC1 news

Work by the group, as part of the European IROMEC project, Dr Ben Robins discusses the work of the group with Kaspar and children with autism on BBC1 news report on Tuesday 29th May 2007 (BBC news site report link). The work has also been discussed live and broadcasted in local and international radio (e.g. Dr. Ben Robins was interviewed live on BBC World Service, BBC Radio 4, and BBC Three Counties radio stations). In addition, online articles can be found in: Business Weekly, News-Medical.net, Engadget, Innovations Report, Scenta, Gizmag, InTheNews.co.uk and RedTram International.

Feelix Growing research on BBC

Work by the group as part of the Feelix Growing research project was featured in the BBC News site.

Best IST Project Website

At the IST Event 2006 in Helsinki, the prize of "Best IST Project Website" was awarded to the portal website of the Network of Excellence HUMAINE. The site was chosen from among some 250 participating websites of currently running EU-funded research projects. At the same event, Lola Cañamero organized the Networking Session "Embodied Emotion, Cognition and Action for Autonomous and Interactive Artifacts" (more details here).

Adaptive Systems Research Group hosts RO-MAN 2006

The Adaptive Systems Research Group hosted RO-MAN 2006, the 15th IEEE International Workshop on Robot and Human Interactive Communication, entitled 'Getting to Know Socially Intelligent Robots'. The conference was held at the University of Hertfordshire on September 6-8th 2006, and attracted 200 participants. Plenary talks are available online.

A Korean TV team from SBS filmed the Robot House in April 2006 for a new story on robotics and Artificial Intelligence.

January-February 2006: Experiments in the "Robot House" as part of the Cogniron project were portrayed in the following newspapers/magazines: The Sun, The Daily Telegraph, Sandwell West Mid Express and Star, The Scotsman, Belfast News Letter Group, Electronics Weekly , Express and Star Wolverhampton, Dundee Courier, Liverpool Daily Post, Scottish daily Record , Welwyn and Hatfield Times, Business Weekly, The Engineer, Huddersfield Daily Examiner, Computer Weekly, Financial Times. The following Radio Stations broadcasted the story: BBC three counties radio - The John Pilgrim Show (interview with Mick Walters), The World Today, BBC World Service, Chiltern FM, Mercury FM, British Satellite News.

ASRG hosts the AISB 2005 Convention

On the 12-15th April 2005 our group hosted the AISB 2005 Convention with the theme of `Social Intelligence and Interaction in Animals, Robots and Agents.' The convention turned out to be the largest AISB convention ever, it attracted 10 symposia and in total 299 participants.
